Got a Rinnai hot water error code? Start here

Most Rinnai continuous flow units have a temperature controller in the kitchen or bathroom. When the unit hits a problem, it shuts down and shows a number on that controller. The code points to an area of the system, but codes vary between models, so the number alone won't tell you the fix.

What to do:

  • Note the code, or snap a photo of the controller.
  • Check whether other gas appliances are working. If the cooktop won't light either, the problem may be the gas supply rather than the Rinnai.
  • Try one reset. If the code comes back, leave it alone. Resetting it over and over won't fix the cause.
  • If you smell gas, isolate the gas supply at the meter and call us straight away.

Then ring 1800 571 216 and tell us the code and the model. It helps your plumber come prepared.

Rinnai continuous flow repair: the faults behind the codes

Continuous flow units heat water only as it flows through, so a fault shows up as cold water, water that swings hot and cold, or a unit that fires then cuts out. The usual suspects:

  • Ignition faults: the unit tries to light but doesn't catch.
  • Flame or sensor faults: it lights, then shuts down.
  • Low flow: a partly closed valve, blocked filter or worn tap can stop the unit sensing enough flow to fire.
  • Gas supply problems: not enough gas reaching the unit, especially when other gas appliances are on.
  • Fan or flue issues: blocked or damaged venting.
  • Controller problems: a dead or faulty controller can look like a dead unit.

We test the unit, the gas supply and the water side before deciding what's failed. Read more on continuous flow hot water repairs.

Rinnai Infinity repair

Infinity is Rinnai's best-known continuous flow range, and it's the one we're called to most often. Whether yours is an older unit or a recent install, the approach is the same: confirm the code, check gas pressure and water flow, then test the components the code points to. If a part has to be ordered, we'll tell you how long it'll take and what your options are in the meantime.

Rinnai HotFlo repair and other Rinnai systems

Not every Rinnai is continuous flow. HotFlo is Rinnai's storage range, so the faults look more like a classic tank: slow to heat, not holding temperature, a dripping relief valve, or water around the base. A tank leaking from the base usually means replacement rather than repair.

Rinnai also makes heat pump and solar systems. We repair and replace those as well. See heat pump hot water and solar hot water repairs.

How a Rinnai callout works with OnCall

  1. Call or book online. Tell us your suburb, the model, any code on the controller and whether there's a leak.
  2. Pre-arrival advice. We'll tell you what to switch off, if anything, and give you ETA updates as your plumber heads over.
  3. Diagnose on site. Your plumber tests the unit, gas supply and water flow and explains what they find.
  4. Approve the price. You get one price for the job. Nothing starts until you agree.
  5. Fix and test. We repair the unit, then check each hot tap and the temperature at the controller before we leave.

Rinnai hot water replacement in Melbourne

Continuous flow units last a good while, but not forever. If yours is getting on in years, needs several parts at once, or the repair bill is creeping close to the cost of a new unit, replacement may be the better call. We'll lay out both options and let you decide.

Replacing like-for-like is usually simple, as the gas, water and flue are already in place. If you're weighing up a different system, such as a heat pump, we'll talk through your household size, utilities and running costs first. Our repair or replace guide covers how to think it through.

A note on warranty

If your Rinnai is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact Rinnai before calling anyone else. Warranty repairs usually go through the manufacturer's own service network. Once it's out of warranty, or if you need someone tonight, we're here.

Pricing for Rinnai repairs

We charge by the job, not by the hour. Your plumber looks at the unit first, then gives you a clear price with the options explained. You approve it before any work starts, so there's no meter running while we test. See hot water repair cost for what affects the price.

Rinnai questions we get asked

Do you repair Rinnai continuous flow units?

Yes. We repair and replace Rinnai continuous flow, storage, heat pump and solar systems across Melbourne. We're an independent plumbing business, not a Rinnai service agent.

My Rinnai controller is blank. Is the unit dead?

Not always. Check that the unit's power point is switched on and that a circuit breaker hasn't tripped. If the controller stays blank, call us.

Why does my Rinnai go cold when someone else turns on a tap?

It can be a flow, gas supply or sizing issue. If your gas meter or pipework can't keep up when several appliances run together, the unit may struggle. We'll check it on site.

Can I fix a Rinnai error code myself?

One reset is fine. Beyond that, leave it to a licensed plumber. Gas appliances need proper gas safety checks.

Will my Rinnai still work in a power outage?

No. Continuous flow units need power to run the controls and fan, even though they heat with gas.

Do you work on Rinnai units at night?

Yes. We're open 24 hours, 7 days, including weekends and public holidays.

Rinnai not firing? We'll sort it.

Tell us the model and the code on the controller. We'll diagnose the fault, price the job and fix it once you're happy.
