What's behind the laundry door in the east
The eastern suburbs have some of Melbourne's most varied housing, and the hot water systems follow suit.
Period and interwar homes in Hawthorn, Kew and Camberwell. Many of these homes have been renovated several times over, so the hot water unit can end up wherever the last renovation put it: an outside wall, a back verandah, a converted laundry, sometimes a roof space. Older copper pipework is common. When we replace a unit in a home like this, the connections often need as much attention as the unit itself.
Post-war brick homes through Box Hill, Blackburn and Mount Waverley. These are often on mains gas, and you'll commonly find a gas storage tank outside near the back door. Plenty have been replaced once already, and the second unit is now reaching the same age the first one did.
Large family homes in Doncaster, Templestowe and Glen Waverley. Bigger households with several bathrooms put real demand on a hot water system. A tank that coped fine when the kids were small can start running out by the third shower once they're teenagers.
Townhouse infill across the whole region. Where an old block has been split into two or three townhouses, you'll usually see continuous flow gas units on the wall or compact electric tanks in a cupboard.
Common faults we see in eastern homes
| What you notice | What's often behind it |
|---|---|
| Pilot light won't stay lit on a gas tank | Thermocouple or gas control fault, common on older storage units |
| Water pooling around an ageing tank | Tank corrosion; a leaking tank usually means replacement |
| Hot water runs out halfway through the morning | A tank too small for the household, or a failing element or burner |
| Flashing number on a wall-mounted unit | A continuous flow error code, ignition, flow or venting |
| Water that swings from hot to cold | A worn tempering valve |
None of this means your unit is finished. A single failed part on a sound tank is usually a repair, and we'll tell you which it is before anyone talks about a new system.

How we work: assess, explain, approve, fix
Assess. Your plumber looks at the whole system: the unit, the valves, the gas or power supply, and the pipework around it. In older eastern homes that pipework matters.
Explain. You get the fault in plain English, your options, and what each one involves.
Approve. One price for the job, given on site. No hourly meter, and nothing starts until you agree.
Fix. We repair or replace the unit, then test every hot tap, the temperature control and the safety valves before we leave.
If the problem turns out to be outside plumbing, such as an electrical fault beyond the unit, we'll tell you and recommend the right trade.
Pricing in the eastern suburbs
We charge by the job, not by the hour, and there's no separate price list by suburb. What moves the price is the job itself: the system type and brand, whether it's a repair or a replacement, access (a unit in a roof space or behind a renovation takes longer than one on an outside wall), and any compliance work needed during a replacement. Your plumber prices it on site and you approve it first. See hot water repair cost for more detail.
Before the plumber gets to you
- Leaking? Switch off the power to the unit at the switchboard or its isolation switch.
- Smell gas? Isolate the gas supply at the meter, avoid flames and switches, and call us.
- Water pouring out? Turn off the water at the meter or the cold valve on the unit.
- Keep the area clear of kids, pets and anything that soaks up water.
We'll talk you through anything else when you call.
Eastern suburbs hot water questions
Do you have a hot water plumber near Camberwell?
Yes, we cover Camberwell, Hawthorn, Kew and the surrounding eastern suburbs, 24/7. We dispatch straight away for urgent jobs and send ETA updates on the way. Timing depends on location, demand and weather.
Can you do hot water repairs in Box Hill today?
Often, yes. We aim for same-day repairs across most Melbourne suburbs, including Box Hill and Blackburn. If a part has to be ordered, we'll tell you the timeframe before we leave.
Do you cover Ringwood and the outer east?
Yes. We cover Ringwood, Mitcham, Croydon and surrounding suburbs. Call 1800 571 216 and we'll confirm for your address.
My Doncaster home keeps running out of hot water. Is the unit failing?
Not necessarily. It may be a failed element, thermostat or burner, or the tank may simply be too small for the household now. We'll check which before recommending anything.
Do you repair older gas storage units?
Yes. We repair gas storage systems across all makes and models, and we'll tell you honestly if the tank's condition makes repair a poor investment. See gas hot water repairs.
Is my period home's pipework a problem?
Sometimes. Older pipework and fittings can need attention when a unit is replaced. We check connections as part of the job and tell you what we find before doing any extra work.
Hot water gone cold in the east?
Whether it's a Camberwell period home, a Glen Waverley family house or a Ringwood townhouse, a licensed OnCall plumber can diagnose it, price it and, once you say yes, fix it.
