Three Dux problems we're called about most
"The shower went lukewarm halfway through." On a Dux electric storage tank, that's often a thermostat or element on the way out. On a gas tank, it can be the burner not firing properly, or sediment in the bottom of the tank slowing heat transfer. Either way, it's usually a repair, not a new unit.
"There's water on the ground near the tank." First, find where it's coming from. A drip from the relief valve's drain pipe is a different job to water seeping from the base of the tank. A valve can be replaced. A tank leaking from the base usually can't be repaired. Switch off the power or gas to the unit and call us. See leaking hot water system.
"It's making a rumbling noise when it heats." Rumbling or popping usually means sediment has built up in the bottom of the tank. It's a sign the unit could use some attention, and worth checking before it turns into a bigger problem.
The Dux systems we work on
Dux is best known for its Australian-made storage tanks, but the range covers more than that.
- Electric storage: from small units in flats to large tanks on off-peak power.
- Gas storage: indoor and outdoor tanks, common in older family homes.
- Proflo: Dux's Proflo range of storage units.
- Heat pump: the electric unit with a fan and compressor, often fitted as an upgrade from gas or standard electric.
- Solar and continuous flow: less common, but we repair those too.
We repair all makes and models, so if it's a Dux, call us.
Dux Proflo repair
Proflo units get the same core checks as any storage tank: the heating components, the thermostat, the sacrificial anode and the relief valve. A dripping or stuck valve is one of the most common calls on any tank, so we always test it. If the tank itself is sound, a part replacement usually gets you going again.
Dux heat pump repair
A heat pump works like a fridge in reverse, pulling heat from the air to warm the water. When one goes wrong, the signs tend to be slow recovery, the backup element running all the time, unusual fan noise, or water that never quite gets hot.
Melbourne's cold snaps make heat pumps work harder, so a unit that copes fine in summer can struggle in July. We check the fan, the heat exchanger performance and the electric boost, and we'll tell you if a fault is electrical and needs an electrician. More on heat pump hot water.
How we fix a Dux
We assess the whole unit. Not just the part you've noticed. A failed element might have a reason behind it, like a worn anode or a thermostat set wrong.
We explain what we've found. In plain English, with your options laid out.
You approve the price. One price for the job, given on site. No hourly meter.
We fix it and test it. Every hot tap, the temperature and the relief valve, before we leave.

Dux hot water replacement: when it's time
Dux tanks are built to last, but every tank has a use-by date. Most hot water systems last 8–15 years, depending on maintenance, water quality and how hard they work.
| Usually worth repairing | Usually time to replace |
|---|---|
| One failed part, element, thermostat, valve or ignition | The tank is leaking |
| Tank in good condition | The system is over 10–15 years old |
| Repair cost is modest | Several parts have failed, or repairs keep piling up |
If replacement is the right call, we safely disconnect and remove the old unit, install the new one, test every hot tap, and commission it. See hot water system replacement.
Warranty first, if you've got it
If your Dux is still under the manufacturer's warranty, get in touch with Dux first. Warranty repairs usually go through the manufacturer's own service network. Outside warranty, or when it can't wait till Monday, give us a call.
Dux hot water service in Melbourne: what it costs
We charge by the job, not by the hour. Your plumber assesses the unit, explains the options and gives you a clear price before any work starts. The price depends on the system, the part, access and whether it's a repair or a replacement. See hot water repair cost.
Dux hot water FAQs
Do you repair Dux hot water systems?
Yes. We repair and replace Dux gas, electric, Proflo, heat pump and solar systems across Melbourne. We're an independent plumbing business, not a Dux service agent.
Is it worth repairing an old Dux tank?
It depends on the tank. If it isn't leaking and only one part has failed, a repair often makes sense. If it's leaking or well past 10–15 years old, replacement is usually better.
My Dux relief valve keeps dripping. Is that normal?
A small amount of water while the tank heats can be normal. A constant drip or steady flow isn't. See relief valve replacement.
Can servicing help my Dux last longer?
Yes. Regular checks of the anode, valves and heating parts help catch wear early. See hot water system servicing.
Can you come out tonight?
Yes. We're open 24 hours, 7 days, including weekends and public holidays.
Will you replace my Dux with another Dux?
If that's what you want and it suits your home, yes. We'll also talk you through other options if they'd suit you better.
