The Rheem systems we work on
Rheem makes most of the hot water types in Melbourne homes, and each one fails differently.
- Gas storage: the familiar tank with a pilot light and a flue, often outside on a side wall. Rheem's Stellar range sits here too.
- Electric storage: common in units, townhouses and homes on an off-peak tariff.
- Continuous flow: the slim gas box on the outside wall that heats water as you use it.
- Heat pump: an electric unit with a fan on top, often fitted when a household moves off gas.
- Solar: roof collectors feeding a tank, with gas or electric boosting.
Not sure which you have? Photograph the label on the side of the unit before you call. It saves time on the phone.
Rheem hot water not working? What we usually find
Gas storage. A pilot that won't stay lit usually points to the thermocouple, the gas control or a draught problem at the flue. If the burner lights but the water stays lukewarm, we check the thermostat and look for sediment build-up in the tank.
Electric storage. No hot water with the power on often means a failed element or thermostat. If the unit keeps tripping the power, the element may have shorted. We'll test it, and if the fault is electrical beyond the unit, we'll tell you that you need an electrician.
Rheem Stellar repair. Stellar units are high-efficiency gas storage systems, and they get the same core checks: ignition, gas control, flue, valves and the tank itself.
Continuous flow. These units show an error code when something's wrong. More on that below.
Any Rheem tank. Rust-coloured water, rumbling or a wet base are worth a call. A tank leaking from the base usually can't be repaired.
Rheem continuous flow error showing on the controller?
A flashing code on a Rheem continuous flow controller tells a plumber where to start looking, but the same number can mean different things on different models. So we won't guess at it here.
Here's what to do instead:
- Write down the code exactly as it shows, or take a photo.
- Turn the unit off and on once at the controller. If it clears and the hot water comes back, keep an eye on it.
- If the code returns, stop resetting it. Repeated resets can hide the real fault and, with gas units, it's not something to keep poking at.
- Call us and tell us the code, the model on the label and what happened just before it stopped.
That gives your plumber a head start. More on these units: continuous flow hot water repairs.

How we handle a Rheem repair: assess, explain, approve, fix
Assess. Your plumber checks the whole system, not just the part you suspect: ignition, gas control and flue on gas units; element, thermostat and anode on electric.
Explain. You get the fault in plain English, what fixing it involves, and whether the rest of the unit is worth keeping.
Approve. We give you a clear price for the job on site. Nothing starts until you say yes.
Fix. We carry out the repair, then test the hot taps, temperature and safety valve before we leave.

Still under warranty?
If your Rheem unit is still under the manufacturer's warranty, check with Rheem first. Warranty repairs usually go through the manufacturer's own service network, and you don't want to risk your cover. For anything outside warranty, or when you can't wait for an appointment, call us.
Rheem hot water replacement in Melbourne
Sometimes repair isn't the smart money. If the tank is leaking, the unit is past 10–15 years, or parts keep failing one after the other, replacing it usually makes more sense. We'll show you why before we recommend it.
You can replace like-for-like with another Rheem, or use the change to look at a different system type. We'll talk through your water use, household size, whether you have gas or off-peak power, and running costs. Then we safely remove the old unit, install the new one, and test and commission it. See hot water system replacement for the full process, or our guide to whether you should repair or replace.
Rheem hot water service in Melbourne: pricing

The price depends on the system type, the failed part, access and whether it's a repair or a replacement. See hot water repair cost.
Rheem hot water questions
Do you repair Rheem hot water systems after hours?
Yes. We're open 24 hours, 7 days, including weekends and public holidays, for urgent hot water problems across Melbourne.
Are you a Rheem service agent?
No. We're an independent plumbing business. We repair and replace Rheem hot water systems, along with all other makes and models. For warranty work, check with Rheem first.
My Rheem gas unit's pilot keeps going out. Can I keep relighting it?
You can try once, following the instructions on the unit. If it won't stay lit, stop and call us. It usually points to a thermocouple, gas control or flue issue that needs a licensed plumber. If you smell gas, isolate the gas supply first.
Can you fix my Rheem today?
Often, yes. We try to fit in same-day repairs across most Melbourne suburbs. If a part needs ordering, we'll tell you the timeframe up front.
Will you push me to buy a new Rheem?
No. We diagnose first and only recommend replacement when repair isn't practical or cost-effective. A leaking tank is the main exception.
Rheem gone cold? Let's get it back on.
Tell us the model, what it's doing and whether it's leaking. We'll diagnose it, price it and, once you say yes, fix it.
