Why we don't publish a price list
"No hot water" can mean a tripped circuit, a failed element, or a tank that's rusted through. The symptom on the phone is often the same. The job isn't.
Any price list for hot water repairs either has to be so wide it's meaningless, or it's a teaser number that grows once someone's in your laundry. We'd rather not play that game. Instead, your plumber looks at the system, finds the fault, and gives you a real price for the real job.
Why phone quotes for hot water are unreliable
We get asked "how much to fix my hot water?" every day, and it's a fair question. The trouble is that a phone quote has to guess at the things that actually decide the cost:
- What's failed. A pilot that won't stay lit could be a thermocouple, a gas control or a flue issue.
- The system. Gas, electric, continuous flow, heat pump and solar all use different parts.
- The tank's condition. A leak from a valve is a repair. A leak from the base usually isn't.
- Access. A ground-level unit in the garage is a different job to one in a tight apartment cupboard or on the roof.
So we'll happily tell you on the phone what's likely and what to check, but the price comes once we've seen it.
What moves the price of a hot water repair
Fault vs replacement. Replacing a single part, such as an element, thermostat, thermocouple or tempering valve, is a different job to replacing the whole system.
System type. Continuous flow, heat pump and solar systems have more specialised components than a basic electric storage tank.
Brand and part availability. Common parts for common brands are easier to source. Less common or older models can take longer.
Access. Roof-mounted solar collectors, ceiling-space units and cramped strata cupboards take more time and care.
After-hours callouts. Night, weekend and public holiday work is available, and your plumber will explain the price for your job before starting, the same as any other time.
What else we find. If a second problem shows up, like high water pressure forcing a relief valve open, we'll explain it and price it separately.
What's included in an OnCall price
When you approve a price, it covers the job as explained to you:
- diagnosing the fault
- the parts and labour to fix it
- testing the hot taps, temperature control and safety valves afterwards
- cleaning up the work area
If the job changes once we're into it, we stop, explain, and get your approval before going any further. No surprise line items on the invoice.
How approve-first pricing works: assess, explain, approve, fix
Assess. Your plumber inspects the system and finds the cause.
Explain. You get the fault in plain English, along with your options: repair, part replacement, or full replacement if the system is beyond saving.
Approve. You get a clear price for the option you choose. Take a minute to think, ask questions, or call whoever you need to.
Fix. Work starts only once you've said yes.
Emergency hot water repair cost
An emergency doesn't mean signing a blank cheque. Night and weekend callouts follow the same rule: assess, explain, approve, then fix. If it's 11pm and the right part isn't available, we'll explain what can be done tonight to make things safe and what the full repair involves. See emergency hot water repairs.
Is it worth repairing?
Sometimes the honest answer to "how much to fix it?" is "more than it's worth". A repair usually makes sense on a younger system with one failed part and a sound tank. Replacement is usually better when the tank is leaking, the system is over 10 to 15 years old, or the repair bills keep stacking up.
We'll give you both options when they're both on the table. For the replacement side of the decision, including what's involved, see hot water system replacement and our repair or replace guide.
Hot water repair cost FAQs
How much does a hot water repair cost in Melbourne?
It depends on the fault, the system type, the parts and the access. We assess on site and give you a clear price before any work starts.
Do you charge by the hour?
No. We charge by the job, not the hour, and you approve the price before any work starts.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
Your price is for the job, explained before work starts. If you'd like to know how attendance is handled for your situation, ask when you call and we'll tell you straight.
Can you give me a price over the phone?
We can tell you what's likely and what to check, but we won't guess a price for a system we haven't seen. You get a firm price on site.
Does an emergency repair cost more?
Your plumber explains the price for your job before starting, day or night, and nothing goes ahead without your approval.
What if I don't want to go ahead?
That's your call. Nothing starts without your approval.
Will you push me to replace my system?
No. We only recommend replacement when repair isn't practical or cost-effective, or the tank is leaking.
Are there rebates for hot water systems?
For replacements, there may be. See hot water rebates in Victoria.
